The British Embassy in Addis Ababa maintain a full range of bilateral relations with the Somaliland authorities, including political liaison as wel as reporting and dealing with commercial, consular and visa matters. This requires frequent visits to Somaliland by embassy staff.

The embassy maintains close contact with the Somaliland authorities and civil society. The embassy recently sent observers for the Somaliland local and Presidential elections. The UK Government gave the Somaliland National Election Commission £158,000 to help meet the costs of those elections.

The embassy has a fund, currently £100,000, for small projects in Somaliland. To date, the fund has mostly been spent on small water, education and health projects. The embassy also liaises with the British High Commission in Nairobi over the spending in Somaliland of funds from the DFID Somali Programme.
